Grade Point Deficit Computation

Any student whose semester, yearly, or cumulative GPA falls below a 2.0 is considered scholastically deficient. A scholastically deficient student’s eligibility to continue at USC (and not be suspended) is determined by the grade point deficit(GPD).

How to calculate the GPD:

Step 1:

To compute the grade points earned, multiply the number of points received for each grade by the number of hours assigned to each course.

Step 2:

Multiply by TWO the number of hours attempted. This gives you the number of points you would have earned with a 2.0 GPA, the minimum GPA allowable before deficit points are earned.

Step 3:

Subtract the number of grade points earned from the number necessary for a 2.0 GPA. This is the GPD.

EXAMPLE:

Step 1:  Compute the Total Grade Points Earned

Course Grade Points Hours Attempted Total Grade Points Earned
ENGL 101 1 (D) 3 3
HIST 111 1 (D) 3 3
GEOL 103 0 (F) 4 0
UNIV 101 2 (C) 3 6
PHIL 102 1 (D) 3 3
TOTAL   16 hours 15 grade points

Step 2:  Multiply by TWO the number of hours attempted.

16 hours attempted x 2 = 32 points

This gives you the number of points you would have earned with a 2.0 GPA, the minimum GPA allowable before deficit points are earned.

Step 3:  Subtract the total number of grade points earned from the number necessary for a 2.0 GPA.

32 points -15 points = 17 Semester GPD points

When your yearly or cumulative GPD exceeds 24 points, you will be suspended from USC and not permitted to take classes for at least 8 months (one major term and one summer).
