Introduction

In 2001, we at the Office of the University Registrar celebrated the University of South Carolina's bicentennial year by exploring our own past. We created this website as an overview of how the Registrar's Office has evolved over the past 200 years. While the bicentennial observance has officially ended, we are continuing to offer this Registrar's history. In fact, we still consider this website a project in progress. We are still interested in learning more about the history of the office and the people that made it function. We hope you'll enjoy this information as much as we enjoyed putting it together. It was a great experience for those involved, and has been personally inspiring.

I thank Registrar's Office staff members Jennifer Burr, Julia Eccles, Linda Godbey, Diane Sanderson, and Michael Wahrmund for responding with enthusiasm and skill when I "volunteered" them to work on this project. I would also like to thank Elizabeth West from the University Archives, and others at South Caroliniana Library who have helped us piece together information from existing resources. Support from the USC Bicentennial Commission has made it a very special endeavor.

On this site you will find information about the origins of the Registrar, summaries of grading and records-keeping methods, portraits of the ten USC Registrars with brief biographies, photos and text scanned from old Garnet & Black yearbooks and The Gamecock, samples of documents, and various recollections.

There is much more to learn about those who have preceded me as University Registrar. I am honored to join their ranks. I pledge to continue the search for information about these nine men and the role they each played as University of South Carolina Registrar and invite knowledgeable individuals to contact me with appropriate information for our continued study.
